is a literary, visual and performing arts magazine from the Lake Superior region. Our publication is released biannually on the solstices, because we believe in a strong tie to the seasons and cycles of things.
Artists and writers submit their work from all over the country and the world, which is then selected by an all volunteer editorial staff.
Currently a 32-page magazine, it consists of 14 color and 16 grey scale interior pages with color covers.
Aqueous is distributed for free throughout the region; in small towns like Ashland, Bayfield and La Pointe as well as our nearest metropolitan areas of Duluth/Superior, Minneapolis and Madison.
Due to budgetary constraints we do not currently pay our contributors (though we really hope to some day).
There is no other publication in the western Lake Superior region open to all styles and genres and dedicated especially to publishing the work of local artists and writers. Aqueous Magazine provides artists with an uncensored opportunity to publish their work beside their regional peers. We strive to be a publication that showcases local talent, while simultaneously creating a progressive platform capable of capturing artists from around the country.
Accessibility to the arts is a vital component and stimulus for raising arts awareness and creating and maintaining healthy, culturally enriched individuals. Aqueous Magazine is proud to be a valuable resource that combines and connects the talents of our Lake Superior communities , and beyond.
BIRTHED OF FRIENDLY DARING
On the night of April 20th, 2013...actually, it was the wee hours of April 21st...a small trio of fledgling writers huddled at a table in The Snug bar. Quiet downtown Washburn, Wisconsin's theater district sheltered a nameless anxiousness that night. The three discussed their desires to have a literary journal that would have an edge they could respect, a character and quality that stung the eyes a little, that missing honesty that can sting them into focus, an honesty they felt missing from the region. A collection of artists' whose works were unafraid of criticism or social mores. A printed piece that could share the talents their region really had to offer; the overlooked and "unwanted" oh, so deserving undiscovered melodies.
"What if we did it?"
Long heavy silence, blaring silence, thumping ringing bells in pinball looks darting between them.
"Only one way to know."
They could certainly have thought of a reason or two not to do it...but a hundred reasons begged back loudly for them to take the leap.
That night suddenly progressed like jazz, passionate conversations spun off tongues like a stream of consciousness writing itself, the little beasty waking, crawling and clawing itself up from the void. They staggered home. Snacked and danced and let the night drive itself. A bottle of Hibiscus liqueur was opened, a sleek 40's typewriter started singing; red ribbon leaving lipstick imprints until the sun came up.
Waking in a blurry interrogation of their past night's intentions, their bodies scattered over furniture like tossed pillows, surveying each other for answers. Was it real? Would they still proceed?
Within months Aqueous would be born.
That spirit continues today with every volume.
Aqueuos is, more than anything, a dream that demands to be real. A dream that continues to figure itself out at every turn. A stubborn ideal as old as stories themselves, but a new twist on the ancient contract of the inspired; the immortal fight to be the stage upon which our spirits find voice.
Above all our contributors are our base and our purpose.
We want you to join us. We need you to join us. Come all yee artists from all corners of life and add to our growing groove. Bring your wildest and weirdest and wonderful.
